LUCKY BROWN & THE SG’S

Pecan Trees Speak To Each Other EP ★★★★★

TRAMP TAPES 10”

Some records just make an instant connection, that the listener knows, regardless of genre, they are hearing something authentic; that the musicians convey a message and are doing so with care, attention to detail, dedication to their craft and a whole lotta love. Lucky Brown, aSeattle-based trumpeter (hence The SG’s, nice touch), has been exploring and developing a primitive horn-heavy, keys-fired deep funk and vernacular jazz sound, presumably since well before his 2007 Tramp debut.

The four tracks comprise a long and edited version of the killer title piece (not dissimilar in feel to Hank Levy’s ‘Whiplash Theme’) and two rehearsal jams that sound like they could have been recorded either
in 1971 or now, but at no time in between. Laid on to four-track cassette with overdubs, the aim of “found acetate” hits the bullseye. The limited edition of 350 is housed in used vintage heavy card 10-inch sleeves.
